YIREHMEX ATHANGUDI TILES

Athangudi tiles are handmade tiles made from local materials like cement, sand, and oxides, and are known for their intricate designs and vibrant colors. They are made over glass surfaces, unlike machine-pressed mosaics, and are a popular flooring choice for decades.

Athangudi tiles are named after the village of Athangudi in the Sivagangai district of Tamil Nadu, India, where they originated. They are also known as Chettinad or Karaikudi tiles. The tiles are traditionally used for flooring in the Chettinad style of architecture, but have gained popularity for various interior and exterior design projects due to their durability and sustainable production process.

Athangudi tiles are heavy, with a 10''x10'' tile weighing 2.2 to 2.5kg. They are famous for their colorful and intricate patterns, mostly created in shades of red, blue, emerald, mustard and grey. The tiles feature floral, geometric, and abstract motifs.

Athangudi tiles are eco-friendly and durable. They are not suitable for wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens because they can become very smooth.

Here are some things to consider about Athangudi tiles:

Packaging and transportation

The tiles are heavy, so careful packaging and transportation is required to prevent breakage.

Integration with other materials

Some say that Athangudi tiles go well with both contemporary and vernacular architecture. They can be integrated with other materials like granite, Kota stone, or vitrified tiles, but requires meticulous planning.

Installation

Athangudi tiles are not easy to install because they are thicker and have less clean edges than regular tiles. The laying process is also different from regular flooring.

Cost

The price of Athangudi tiles varies by vendor and design. More intricate designs and custom orders can cost more.

Maintenance

Athangudi tiles become shinier with use, so they require regular sweeping and swabbing. To maintain their color and sheen, you can mop the floor once a week with warm water and 10–15 drops of coconut oil.
