Athangudi tiles are known for their intricate designs and vibrant colors, which feature floral, geometric, and abstract motifs. They are made using local materials like sand, cement, and synthetic oxides. The tiles are sun-baked and come in different sizes and shapes.
The standard colors used are red, mustard, green, yellow , blue, black and grey.
The tiles are about an inch in thickness and come in three size options: 6 by 6 inches, 8 by 8 inches, and 10 by 10 inches. Now days maximum using 10 by 10 inches.
The tiles are made by laying a 5mm glass base on the ground, then placing a metal frame on top to establish the dimensions. The tiles are handmade over glass surfaces, unlike machine pressed and produced mosaics.
The tiles can be cleaned regularly with a mixture of water and 10-15 drops of coconut oil to keep their shine. The more the tiles are walked on, the more sheen they get.
