The process of making Athangudi tiles
The process of making Athangudi tiles involves the following steps:
Clean glass slabs are placed as a base for the tile.
A metal border frame is placed over the glass slab.
Inside the border frame, a designed frame locally called as Aass is placed to make the design.
Color solution is poured in different compartments of the frame according to the design.
A mix of the desired colored oxide with cement slurry is then poured into these molds.
Once the color layer is laid, a dry mix of sand and cement is spread on top.
The mason then fills the remainder of the mold with a wet mortar of cement, sand, and water.
Finally, they compress the tile together with a plate, giving it a smooth, sturdy base for a seamless finish.
The legacy of Athangudi tiles dates to the eighteenth century. These tiles come in sizes of 8"*8" and 10"*10". They are comparably economical and very durable. They can be laid for interior flooring.
