Historical background of Athangudi Tiles
Athangudi tiles are handcrafted tiles that originated in the village of Athangudi, in the Chettinad region of Tamil Nadu. The history of these tiles can be traced back to the pre-independence era of India when trade was being facilitated between India and western countries.
During the colonial era, Western made tiles were popular among the rich and famous of the region. However, it was difficult to replace damaged imported tiles in a hurry. To overcome this problem, an enterprising community set up a cottage industry that made replicas of the imported tiles. These tiles were named after the Athangudi village, where tile-making has become a traditional local craft carried out in the same manner even today.
Athangudi tiles have been made in the Tamil Nadu region of southern India for more than 200 years. The tiles are handcrafted using age old traditional practices and craftsmanship. They are durable and the more they are used, the shinier they become.
